Mayer Hawthorne & The County – Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out

February 17, 2009

mayer-hawthorne

Mayer Hawthorne is a 29-year-old white guy, but you’d never guess it from listening to his music. It’s got a retro feel that sounds like old-school Motown. He’s on the Stones Throw record label, which primarily consists of rap/hip-hop artists in the LA area. This is my favorite song of the moment – Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out.

Download the mp3 and I’ll get back to you if I can actually find the lyrics!

Chris Cornell – Part Of Me

February 14, 2009

I know I haven’t posted in the longest time! But this song deserves a comeback post. Chris Cornell, formerly of Soundgarden and Audioslave, is coming out with a solo album, to be released March 10. Instead of working with the other typical rock artists, this time Chris has collaborated Timbaland. And we all know that anything Tim touches turns to gold. Chris’s album has already leaked and I love it. My favorite song is the first song on the album, Part of Me. Enjoy!

Chris Cornell – Part of Me

January 8, 2009

My first post of 2009 is about the song “Jealousy” by Sparkadia. The title is an obvious description of the song, but the message still rings true.

Jealousy, look what it’s done to you
Look what it’s done to me

Coldplay – Glass of Water

December 7, 2008

Coldplay released a special EP/Mini Album recently, and one of my favorite songs on it is “Glass of Water.” The piano is really amazing. Enjoy!

Glass of Water mp3 and lyrics

Leona Lewis – Run

November 15, 2008

Leona Lewis, an amazing singer who won the British show X-Factor (think American Idol) has done a cover of one of my favorite songs, Snow Patrol’s Run. It’s such a beautiful song and she did a great job with it.

Download it here.

Taylor Swift – You Belong With Me

November 9, 2008

Normally I hate country music and won’t touch it with a 10 foot pole, but I’ve been hearing so much about Taylor Swift that I had to see what the fuss was about. I listened to a 30-second clip of the song “You Belong With Me” on iTunes and I loved it immediately. I don’t know about the rest of her music, but this song is much more pop than it is country. It’s just an upbeat, catchy song. It’s about being into your best friend, but he’s with someone else who isn’t right for him.

Here is the mp3 and the lyrics.

If there are other Taylor Swift songs that I should listen to, let me know!

Beyonce – I Am…Sasha Fierce

November 7, 2008

Beyonce has a new CD coming out. It’s a double-disc cd: one shows Beyonce’s more vulnerable side while the other is more up-tempo, fun songs. A few of the songs have leaked and these are my two favorites: Halo and Broken-Hearted Girl. These are both from the first CD of the more vulnerable songs. Fun fact: Halo was produced by Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic.

Halo is about falling in love and just letting go completely:

Remember those walls I built
Well baby they tumbling down
And they didn’t even put up a fight
They didn’t even make a sound
I found a way to let you in
But I never really had a doubt
Standing in the light of your halo
I got my angel now

Halo lyrics

Broken-Hearted Girl is completely different – this one is about loving someone who doesn’t deserve your love. And even though you know they don’t deserve it, you can’t let go.

I don’t wanna be without you babe
I don’t want a broken heart
Don’t wanna to take breath without you baby
I don’t want to play that part
I know that I love you but let me just say
I don’t wanna love you in no kinder way, no no
I don’t want a broken heart
I don’t want to play the broken-hearted girl

Broken-Hearted Girl lyrics

Two really powerful songs that I highly recommend. I’ll definitely be listening to the whole “I Am… Sasha Fierce” album when it comes out November 18th.

Travis – Something Anything

November 7, 2008

Today’s song is “Something Anything” by Travis. They have a new album out and this is the first single. Not quite sure what this song is about, but it’s good and probably about a breakup :)

Download it here: Travis – Something Anything and read the lyrics and let me know what you think it’s about!

Lady Gaga – Starstruck

October 31, 2008

This is probably the first song I’m posting that isn’t about heartbreak. But it’s a REALLY good dance song, by a new artist Lady Gaga. She’s been getting a lot of coverage lately because she was on The Hills. She’s only 22 and she used to be a DJ in New York City. Starstruck is a great upbeat club song, with Flo Rida doing some rapping.

Download Lady Gaga – Starstruck.

Other good songs on her album: Beautiful Dirty Rich, Boys Boys Boys, and Just Dance (featuring Colby O’Donis)
